A Real Field Case from South Korea: Reusing an Existing Ceiling Box, Solving a Mounting Screw Problem, and Improving a Balcony Storage Light
This project was part of a full apartment interior renovation in South Korea. Our electrical work began earlier in the renovation, including replacement of aging wiring and preparation of the lighting and outlet circuits.
Because only parts of the existing ceiling were opened during remodeling, replacing old concealed wiring required more care than it would have in a completely exposed ceiling.
The work shown here took place later, during the final electrical finishing stage. The job itself was small: install a motion sensor ceiling light inside a balcony storage space. But several details from this installation show how even a simple lighting job can require practical field judgment.

During the earlier stage of the renovation, aging conductors were replaced with new 2.5 mm² HFIX insulated conductors, a type commonly used for building wiring in South Korea.
When replacing conductors inside an older concealed conduit, I normally avoid pulling every existing conductor out at once.
If several conductors are present, I leave one conductor temporarily and use it to pull a fish tape through the existing route. Only after the fish tape has successfully passed through do I completely remove the old wiring.
There is a practical reason for this. In an older building, the conduit may pass through an unexpected intermediate box, or the conduit route may not be as continuous as it appears. If every conductor is removed first and a new fish tape cannot pass through, recovering the wiring route can become difficult.
On this apartment, the old conductors pulled out successfully and the new wiring could be installed through the existing route.
When replacing wiring in an older concealed conduit, keeping one usable conductor in place until a fish tape has been successfully pulled through can preserve the existing wiring route. Removing every conductor first can create a difficult situation if the conduit is interrupted or passes through an unexpected intermediate box.
2. Why We Changed the Storage Light to a Motion Sensor
The light was located inside a small storage space on the balcony.
Originally, this storage light operated together with the main balcony light. During the renovation, we separated it from that switching arrangement and converted it into an independently operating motion sensor light.
The storage space is not opened frequently, so there was little practical reason to install and operate a separate wall switch just for this light. Instead, the circuit was arranged so that constant power was available to the sensor light.
When movement is detected inside the storage area, the light turns on automatically.
The sensor was set to operate during both daytime and nighttime because lighting may be needed whenever the storage door is opened, regardless of the amount of daylight outside.
This was not simply a fixture replacement. The lighting arrangement itself was changed to better match how the space would actually be used.
3. Reusing the Existing Ceiling Box
The existing metal ceiling box was still in serviceable condition, so it was reused.
The new wiring had already been prepared during the earlier electrical work. Live, neutral, and protective earth conductors were available at the lighting point.
This particular sensor light did not have a grounding terminal. The unused protective earth conductor was therefore insulated and retained inside the ceiling box rather than being cut off.
Keeping the protective conductor available also preserves it for a future replacement fixture that may require a grounding connection.
The Supplied Screws Did Not Fit the Existing Box
This was the small but important problem encountered during the installation.
The pointed screws supplied with the new light were intended for fastening into materials such as wood. They were not suitable for the threaded mounting points of the existing metal ceiling box.
When tested in the box, the supplied screws were too thin and simply turned without securing the mounting bracket.
Electricians normally carry a variety of screws and small mounting hardware for situations like this. From my hardware box, I selected a suitable machine screw that properly engaged with the existing ceiling box.
This type of electrical-box screw is commonly referred to by electricians on Korean job sites as an “Ido screw” (이도피스). The important point here is not the local nickname, but that the screw must correctly engage with the threaded mounting point and hold the bracket securely.

What If an Old Box No Longer Holds a Screw?
On this apartment, the threaded mounting points were still in good condition. Older buildings, however, can present a different problem.
If the mounting tab is only slightly loose but otherwise serviceable, carefully reshaping it with pliers can sometimes help the screw grip firmly again.
If the mounting point is badly corroded, broken, or completely missing, I do not rely on it. In that situation, a separate fixing point can be drilled into the concrete and secured with an appropriate anchor.
Another condition occasionally encountered on top-floor apartments is a ceiling box buried too deeply behind insulation. Depending on the installation, an extension box can be used to bring the mounting point to a practical position.
These conditions did not occur on this particular job. They are examples from other renovation work and are included here because they affect how an electrician evaluates an existing ceiling box.
4. Mounting the Bracket and Connecting the Light
After selecting the correct screw, the mounting bracket was secured firmly to the existing ceiling box.
The sensor light came with its own wiring connector, so the supplied connector was used for the live and neutral connections on this installation.
For an ordinary low-ceiling residential fixture like this, the connector provides a fast and practical installation, and the fixture can be accessed again easily if maintenance is required.
My approach can be different when a light is installed at a location that cannot be reached without a lift or other access equipment. Small fixture connectors can occasionally develop connection problems. At difficult-to- access locations, I prefer a more direct conductor connection finished with an appropriate wire connector when the installation conditions allow it.
The reason is practical: connection reliability matters even more when a minor fault would require access equipment and another service visit just to reach the fixture.

Before tightening a ceiling fixture against its bracket, check that no conductor is trapped between the fixture and a sharp metal edge.
Early in my electrical career, I experienced a case on another job where a conductor was pinched while a fixture was being tightened. The insulation was damaged and the fault occurred immediately with a pop.
Since then, checking the position of every conductor before final tightening has been part of my finishing routine. A fixture can look mechanically secure while an electrical fault is hidden behind it.
5. Restoring Power and Testing the Sensor
The lighting circuit was switched off before the fixture wiring was handled. After the bracket, connections, and conductor positions had been checked, the fixture was fully secured and power was restored.
I then walked past the sensor approximately twice to confirm that movement was detected and that the LED light switched on correctly.
Because this fixture serves an enclosed balcony storage space, it was set to respond to movement during the day as well as at night.
There was no need for a complicated commissioning procedure. The important point was to verify that the sensor operated correctly under the conditions in which the homeowner would actually use the space.

6. What This Small Job Shows About Renovation Electrical Work
Installing a small motion sensor light is not a complicated electrical job. But renovation work is rarely just a matter of following the instructions supplied with a new product.
On this project, the existing ceiling box had to be evaluated, the original switching arrangement was changed, unsuitable supplied screws were identified, the protective conductor was preserved, the wiring had to be positioned safely behind the bracket, and the sensor operating mode had to match the way the storage space would actually be used.
The most visible result was simply a new ceiling light.
The more meaningful improvement was behind it: a storage light that had previously operated together with the balcony lighting was converted into an independent motion-activated light that better suited the space.
Good electrical finishing often comes down to small decisions: reuse what is still serviceable, replace what is not, select mounting hardware that actually fits the existing installation, keep conductors clear of sharp mounting hardware, and configure the circuit around how the space will actually be used.
A Note for DIY Installation
A small residential light fixture can be a manageable project for someone who already has basic electrical experience and understands how to safely isolate the correct circuit.
However, someone who cannot positively identify and isolate the circuit should not treat the work as a simple mechanical DIY project.
The difficult part is not tightening two screws. It is knowing whether the electrical conditions behind those screws are safe.
