A field-tested method for positioning small recessed lights before the drill touches the ceiling
A clean downlight layout is not created simply by spacing holes equally. The drawing, the finished room, the ceiling structure, and the exact fixture cutout all have to agree before the first opening is drilled.
This becomes especially important with 2-inch recessed downlights—called 매입등 (maeipdeung) on Korean job sites. Their compact size produces a refined ceiling, but it also makes alignment errors more obvious and leaves far less room for cable work above the ceiling.
This article documents the process I used on an actual newly built apartment project in Seocho-gu, Seoul. I have worked in South Korea’s electrical field since 2009, and this is one of those jobs where a few extra minutes spent checking the layout can prevent hours of ceiling repair later.
Why 2-inch downlights are unforgiving
A misplaced opening cannot simply be moved after drilling. The old hole may have to be patched and the ceiling finish restored. Smaller fixtures also provide less trim coverage, so even a minor alignment error can remain visible across the entire row.
1. Start With the Finished Room—not Only the Drawing
Before setting out any light positions, I compare the lighting drawing with the actual room dimensions. Finished construction can differ from the drawing by several millimeters or even several centimeters. That difference may be small on paper but obvious when multiple fixtures form a long straight line.
I also check how the proposed rows relate to walls, openings, ceiling features, and the way the room will be viewed. The drawing remains the design reference, but the real room determines whether the layout will appear balanced after installation.
Field rule
Never multiply an unchecked reference point. If the first baseline is wrong, every downlight measured from it will repeat the same error.
2. Establish Reference Lines With a Laser
The laser level creates the horizontal and vertical reference lines for the room. Their intersections allow each downlight center to be transferred accurately to the ceiling and make it easier to verify that fixtures remain aligned from one end of the space to the other.
Before laser levels became common, long reference lines were often established by 먹줄 튀기기 (meokjul twigigi)—snapping a chalk line across the surface. That method is still useful over long distances, while a laser is convenient when working alone or when the ceiling surface must remain clean.
The tool does not decide the layout. It only reproduces the reference established by the installer. Room measurements, fixture spacing, ceiling obstructions, and the intended visual axis must be resolved first.
3. Three Laser Levels Under the Same Site Conditions
I used three laser levels during this project. All three were suitable under ordinary indoor lighting, but strong daylight entering through the apartment’s large windows made their visibility differences easier to see.

This was a practical comparison during one installation, not a controlled laboratory test. Visibility changes with ambient light, distance, battery condition, surface, viewing angle, and camera exposure.

4. Compensating for a Laser Blind Spot
Many compact cube-style laser levels have a small interruption in the projected line because part of the emitter is blocked by the housing. If a downlight center falls inside this gap, the point cannot be marked directly from the light.
The practical solution is simple: align a long straightedge with the visible sections, extend the missing line with a pencil, and then mark the center. This small step prevents the tool’s physical blind spot from becoming a layout error.
The rounded AcuAngle used here projects the line around almost the entire housing, so the interruption is largely eliminated. On Korean construction sites, tools with this rounded form are sometimes nicknamed “spaceships” (우주선). They are also commonly seen in carpentry and interior-finishing work.
5. Inspect Before Drilling
The center mark is not automatic permission to drill. Before opening the ceiling, I verify the installation conditions at every proposed position.
- Check for M-bars and other ceiling framing.
- Confirm the positions of sprinkler, refrigerant, and drain pipes.
- Avoid existing electrical cables and other concealed services.
- Compare the marked locations with the drawing and the finished room.
- Discuss necessary design changes with the site manager before drilling.
Do not drill on layout information alone
Concealed pipes, framing, and wiring can turn one incorrect opening into a serious safety problem and an expensive repair. Ceiling inspection and drilling should be performed only by appropriately qualified personnel using the correct detection and safety procedures.
6. Confirm the Actual Cutout Diameter
On Korean sites, making the ceiling opening is commonly called 타공 (tagong). “2-inch downlight” does not guarantee one universal 타공 size. Depending on the manufacturer and model, fixtures sold in this nominal size may require cutouts such as:
These are examples, not a universal specification. I verify the manufacturer’s required cutout for the exact fixture before selecting the hole saw. An opening that is too small must be enlarged carefully; an opening that is too large may not be covered by the trim and can require ceiling repair.
The smaller opening also makes above-ceiling work more demanding. Pulling conductors or routing SF flexible conduit and CV cable through a compact cutout requires more care and working time than a larger 3-inch or 4-inch opening.
Final Thoughts
Professional downlight installation begins before the drill touches the ceiling. The finished result depends on establishing a reliable reference, checking the real room, inspecting concealed conditions, and confirming the exact fixture cutout.
A bright and accurate laser makes the work faster, but it cannot replace judgment. The installer still has to recognize a drawing-to-site mismatch, compensate for the tool’s limitations, and stop before drilling when the ceiling conditions are uncertain.
That preparation is especially valuable with 2-inch downlights, where both the visual tolerance and the available working space are small. Careful layout at the beginning produces a cleaner ceiling and greatly reduces the chance of rework.
