Installing a Classic Italian FLOS Frisbi Pendant Light in a Seoul Residence

This residential renovation project in Gangnam-gu involved more than replacing one decorative light with another. The existing pendant hung above a tall stairwell, where access, ceiling support, cable length, and the view from several elevations all influenced the installation.

Before removing the old fixture, I identified the relevant lighting circuit, isolated it, and verified absence of voltage at the ceiling connection point. I also checked the existing outlet conductors and the condition of the mounting location before unpacking the new fixture.

The electrical task behind the design A pendant may weigh only a few kilograms, but its ceiling support and electrical connection perform different jobs. The supply conductors must be terminated correctly, while the fixture’s mechanical load must be carried by a suitable mounting point—not by the conductors.

Why the Stairwell Changed the Installation

The renovation had opened the ceiling volume above the stairs. Conduits that would normally remain above a finished ceiling were exposed and painted to blend with the surface. This created more vertical space, but it also placed the lighting point much higher than an ordinary residential ceiling.

That height changed both the working method and the final appearance. Stable access was essential because the fixture had to be supported, connected, adjusted, and inspected above a stair void. A secure work platform and controlled handling mattered more than the relatively modest fixture weight.

High-level work is a separate risk A light 2.5 kg fixture does not make stairwell work simple. Access equipment must suit the level difference and work area, and the installer must be able to use both hands without relying on an unstable ladder position.

The tall space also suits the Frisbi visually. A person sees it from below on the lower floor, nearly level from partway up the stairs, and from the side at a higher elevation. Few residential locations reveal so many profiles of the same pendant.


The FLOS Frisbi at a Glance

Designed by Achille Castiglioni in 1978, the Frisbi uses a large opaline PMMA diffuser suspended below a reflector by three thin steel cables. Its 600 mm disc looks substantial when unpacked, but the fixture remains visually light after installation.

The product information supplied for this installation identified an E27 lamp holder and a 220–250 V, 50/60 Hz supply range, making the fixture electrically compatible with the Korean 220 V environment when used with a suitable lamp within the manufacturer’s limits.

The E27 base alone does not determine lamp suitability. Lamp type, dimensions, heat output, wattage, dimming requirements, and the fixture manufacturer’s instructions must also agree.

Pre-Installation Checks at the Ceiling Point

Before assembly, I treated the installation as two coordinated systems: the electrical connection and the mechanical suspension.

  • Electrical isolation: isolate the relevant circuit and verify absence of voltage at the ceiling conductors.
  • Conductor condition: inspect the existing supply conductors, connection space, insulation, and identification before reuse.
  • Mounting support: confirm that the ceiling fixing point and hardware can support the complete pendant independently of the wiring.
  • Access: establish stable high-level access suited to the stairwell rather than stretching from an ordinary ladder position.
  • Product requirements: follow the fixture’s assembly, suspension, lamp, and electrical-connection instructions.
Electrician’s field point A pendant’s low weight is helpful during handling, but weight alone does not confirm that an existing hook, bracket, anchor, or ceiling surface is suitable. The actual supporting material and fixing condition must be checked before the old mounting point is reused.

Assembly and Installation

The Frisbi’s construction is simpler than its finished form suggests. Three fine suspension wires carry the large diffuser below the reflector, while the central cord and lampholder remain visually compact.

After removing the existing pendant, I assembled the fixture according to its component arrangement, established the mechanical support, connected the supply at the existing ceiling point, and adjusted the drop for the stairwell. The long cord provided enough range for the unusually high space.

The final checks were not limited to whether the lamp illuminated. I checked that the pendant hung securely, the diffuser remained level, the suspension wires shared the intended geometry, the canopy covered the ceiling connection, and the cord was not carrying the fixture’s mechanical load improperly.

Why the Fixture Works in a Staircase

From the side, the diffuser appears as a very thin floating plane. From directly below, the complete 600 mm circle, central opening, and reflected light become the dominant geometry.

A staircase continuously changes the viewer’s elevation, so both profiles remain visible in normal use. On the lower floor, the pendant reads as a luminous disc. While climbing, the same fixture gradually becomes a thin horizontal line.

Design and installation met at the same point The high ceiling made access more demanding, but it also gave the pendant enough distance to reveal its full form. Selecting the drop height was therefore both a technical installation decision and a visual one.

An Electrician’s Impression

The Frisbi is not mechanically complex, and its approximate 2.5 kg weight made it manageable at this site once safe access had been established. Its value lies less in complicated construction than in proportion, design history, and the way direct, diffused, and reflected light interact with the surrounding space.

For me, the strongest feature was the difference between the side view and the view from directly underneath. The staircase allowed that transformation to be experienced naturally rather than from one fixed viewing position.

Site condition when photographed The interior renovation was still in progress. Painting and other finishing work around the ceiling and staircase had not been completed, so the photographs document the electrical installation stage rather than the final finished interior.
