Installing Suspended Track Lighting on a Korean Tex Ceiling

Suspending black track rails below a Korean 300 × 600 mm tile ceiling while keeping alignment, support, and finish under control

This commercial interior project took place in Baegot, Siheung, South Korea. The task was to suspend black track lighting below an existing black ceiling rather than mount the rails directly against the ceiling surface.

The visible ceiling consisted of 300 × 600 mm mineral-fiber tiles, commonly called Tex on Korean job sites, with an M-Bar framing system above them. The tile grid gave us repeatable layout references; it did not carry the lighting track. The suspension hardware was attached at the metal framing above the tiles.

The distinction that controlled the installation The ceiling tiles were useful for layout, but they were not treated as structural support. The condition and capacity of the framing and every attachment point must be assessed for the actual track, fittings, and site conditions.

Reading the Existing Ceiling Before Setting Out

Before installing any suspension hardware, we opened the ceiling locally and checked what was available above the finished tiles. This prevented a common mistake: confusing a convenient surface reference with a suitable load-bearing point.

At this site, brackets were fixed to the existing M-Bar framing to establish the suspension points. The 300 × 600 mm tile pattern then helped us keep those points visually consistent across the room.

Why the project used approximately 1,200 mm spacing

For this layout, two 600 mm tile modules gave an easy-to-repeat reference of approximately 1,200 mm between selected suspension points. The grid reduced cumulative measuring errors and made it easier to keep multiple rods on the same visual line.

Project dimension—not a universal support rule The 1,200 mm interval records what was used on this installation. It must not be copied as a general standard. Suitable spacing depends on the rail system, connector locations, luminaire loads, framing condition, attachment method, manufacturer instructions, and project requirements.

Preparing Hardware for an Exposed Black Ceiling

Black track rails and black hangers were available as finished products, but the threaded rods and mounting brackets had a bright metal finish. Once suspended below the tiles, those small silver lines would have remained visible against the dark ceiling.

We therefore spray-painted the exposed suspension hardware black before installation. This was a finishing decision rather than an electrical requirement, but it had a noticeable effect: the supports receded visually and the lighting track became the dominant line.

Suspending and Aligning the Track

The crew secured the mounting brackets, suspended the 1,500 mm threaded rods—called jeonsan bolts in everyday Korean site language—and fitted black track hangers at their lower ends. The long rods provided enough adjustment range to establish the required track height below the ceiling.

We used black 2 m rail sections, cutting or joining them where the lighting layout required. Before tightening the complete run, the hanger positions were checked so that rail joints and suspension points did not create visible steps or twists.

A horizontal laser line was then used to compare the installed height across the space. Fine adjustment at each threaded rod and hanger brought the rails onto one level line before the luminaires were positioned.

What mattered more than the nominal dimensions A clean result depended on checking the actual support points, planning joints and hangers together, and adjusting the whole run as one visual line. Tile dimensions and rod lengths were useful inputs, not substitutes for final alignment.

A Small Track-Cutting Detail from the Field

One minor habit saved time when marking the rails. If the tape-measure hook is inserted into the open track channel, it can catch inside the narrow profile and become difficult to remove. Pulling harder risks damaging the hook or tape.

We turned the rail over and measured from its flat back instead. The photograph shows the difference more clearly than a long explanation.

Completed Installation

After leveling, the luminaires were mounted and aimed for the final lighting plan. Painting the otherwise exposed hardware black kept the long suspension drops from competing visually with the rails and fittings.

The dimensions are useful because they describe the real job; the transferable lesson is the sequence of inspection, support planning, alignment, and finishing.
