Once a black ceiling has been painted, finding the hidden timber supports or metal framing becomes slow and uncertain. Every unnecessary hole, scratch, and patch can remain visible on the finished surface.
At this chicken restaurant project in Siheung, Gyeonggi-do, we avoided that problem before it began. The concealed supports were located before painting and marked with long screws that remained visible after the finish coat. Those reference points later allowed us to restore the lighting layout with a laser level and fix the rails securely without repeatedly probing the completed ceiling.
The black track was designed as a large rectangle with one center run. This arrangement followed the dark interior concept of the franchise while distributing adjustable lighting over the planned table positions.
1. The Installation Started Before Painting
The wiring was completed while the ceiling structure was still visible. At that stage, the timber supports and metal ceiling members could be identified directly. We drove long wood screws into important support positions and asked the painting crew not to remove them.
These were not the final fasteners for the track. They were physical markers left behind for the next stage of work. Once the ceiling was coated black, the structure above it would no longer be easy to trace from below.
Restoring the geometry with a laser
After painting, the retained screws became the starting references. A laser level projected straight lines across the ceiling so the large rectangle and its center run could be aligned before fastening began.
The laser unit photographed below was aimed upward at the ceiling. We did not mark a chalk line on the floor for this installation. That method can be useful on other projects, but the preserved ceiling reference points were sufficient here.
A visible track system must be checked in two ways: by measurement at the ceiling and by appearance from the floor. A small angular error at one corner becomes increasingly obvious as it continues along a long black rail.
2. Building the Rectangular Track Layout
The lighting layout was developed on site rather than copied from a fixed drawing. We considered the room dimensions, the expected table positions, and the dark atmosphere normally used by this franchise. The outer rectangle created the main visual frame, while the center run provided additional lighting over the tables.
Cutting and arranging the rail sections
Eight black track sections, each 2 m long, were used for a total of approximately 16 m. Some were installed at full length, while others were cut or extended to suit the actual ceiling dimensions. A DeWalt 5-inch cordless grinder was used for the site cuts, and each cut or open end was completed with the appropriate connector or end component.
The final arrangement used three L-connectors, one T-connector, two straight connectors, one power-feed component, and one end cap. Planning this combination before lifting the rails reduced repeated fitting and rework.
One power-feed point
The full arrangement was supplied from one feed point. The site lighting circuit used HFIX 2.5 mm² conductors and a 20 A circuit breaker. Y-shaped crimp terminals were prepared and secured under the screw terminals in the feed component.
Because the connection would be enclosed after assembly, we checked the terminal crimp, screw tightness, and conductor routing before closing the cover. These ratings describe the actual installation at this site; they are not presented as a universal specification for every track-lighting circuit.
3. Fastening, Testing, and Final Operation
Fixing the track into known supports
Where the ceiling structure permitted, the rails were fastened at approximately 600 mm intervals. On perpendicular runs, the screw positions followed the concealed supports available above the ceiling. This was the practical spacing used at this site, not a stated universal requirement for every rail product or ceiling system.
The advance markers now delivered their full value. Instead of tapping, probing, or drilling through the completed black surface to search for backing, we could align each rail with the laser and drive the fasteners into known support points. The complete track installation was finished in one day.
Insulation resistance measurement
After all 14 fixtures had been mounted, the completed installation was tested at 250 V DC. The insulation resistance tester indicated approximately 500 MΩ.
This measurement recorded the condition of the installed circuit after the site-cut rails, connectors, feed point, and fixtures had been assembled. Test voltage and procedure must always be selected for the connected equipment and the manufacturer’s instructions; the value reported here is the result from this specific installation.
What Made This Installation Efficient
Two electricians completed the overall electrical work over three days, and the track-lighting stage took the final day. The decision that saved the most time was not made during final installation. It was made before the ceiling was painted.
Marking the concealed supports in advance gave the laser layout reliable starting points, protected the black finish from unnecessary damage, and allowed the rails to be fixed into solid backing without delay. The finished appearance was the result of coordinating the hidden structure, visible geometry, electrical connections, and testing as one continuous process.
Track lighting begins with geometry before it becomes electrical work. On a dark commercial ceiling, that geometry remains visible in every straight run, every corner, and every beam of light.
