A non-contact voltage tester was used as an initial indication of whether voltage was present at the accessible wiring.

It was the orientation of the T5 power connector.

The T5 fixtures used on this project were designed to connect to one another through male and female connectors. A supplied connector cable had to be prepared to connect the lighting system to its power supply.

Before modifying this type of cable, it is important to determine which connector will remain on the energized side after the installation is completed.

If a connector cable is prepared incorrectly, accessible conductive contacts could potentially remain connected to the supply side.

For that reason, I checked the connector configuration before cutting the cable rather than simply shortening it first.

A cable that appears interchangeable from a mechanical standpoint may not be interchangeable from an electrical-safety standpoint.

A Small Check That Prevents a Serious Mistake

This was a small detail that took only a short time to verify, but it is exactly the type of detail that can be overlooked during a fast replacement job.

Before preparing the cable, I checked:

  • which end would be connected to the power supply;
  • which connector would remain accessible;
  • whether conductive contacts could become energized and exposed; and
  • how the fixtures would connect sequentially around the recessed ceiling.

For this reason, the specifications of the actual product being installed should be checked instead of assuming that the limit for one T5 lighting system applies to another.

Installation and Final Test

Once the connector configuration had been confirmed and the cable prepared correctly, the replacement fixtures were installed in the existing cove.

Because compatible fixtures had been prepared in advance, the replacement could be completed without additional ceiling modification.

The entire replacement took approximately 30 minutes.

After completing the installation, I restored power and tested the complete lighting system.
